Water Management

Water Management

Even though the earth is considered to be rich in water only 1% is considered to be fresh water that is useful for human needs. Agriculture needs to be central to any policy implementations for water management and conservation as it accounts for the majority of the freshwater used. With increased utilisation of already scarce resources the river basins cannot provide enough freshwater or the river water does not even reach the sea.

Rainwater harvesting is therefore key in not only providing water for the crops but also helping in ultimately raising the groundwater table. Another important reason to highlight the importance of rainwater harvesting is 'evapotranspiration'. Evapotranspiration is defined as the amount of water that crops convert into vapour. Approximately 80% of the water vapour is from rainwater and only 20% is from groundwater (irrigation).

There is also the potential of using organic means to ensure that the soil can hold more moisture and in turn require less water for growing crops. We will look to create awareness around the importance of water management and conversation using a community based sustainable approach.
